How does the contraceptive injection work?

The contraceptive shot (also known as DMPA, or Medroxyprogesterone acetate, the medical name) is an injection of the hormone progestin, which prevents you from getting pregnant by stopping ovulation and by thickening your cervical mucus. It’s a safe, convenient, and private contraceptive method that is effective for 3 months. However, the injection does not protect from STDs.

What are the disadvantages of contraceptive injections?

  • You have to get the injection every 3 months in order to remain protected against pregnancy. It is very important to receive the injections on time to remain protected.
  • You may experience negative side effects when you start using it – these typically go away after a few months: nausea, weight gain, headaches, breast tenderness, depression, or small bruising where the shot was done.
  • It may take up to 10 months to get pregnant after receiving your last shot.

How can I get contraceptive injections?

You can ask your doctor or any health center. Most of the time, it is done by a doctor or a nurse and you should take an appointment for the injection.
